The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the principal regulatory body responsible for ensuring food safety and compliance in India. Established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the FSSAI is tasked with overseeing and regulating the manufacture, processing, distribution, sale, and import of food products to ensure public health and safety. An FSSAI license is mandatory for all businesses involved in the food industry, ranging from small eateries to large food manufacturers.
Types of FSSAI Licenses
1. Basic Registration: For small-scale businesses or startups with an annual turnover of less than Rs. 12 lakh. This basic registration can be upgraded to a state license as the business grows.
2. State License: Required for medium-sized food businesses with an annual turnover between Rs. 12 lakh and Rs. 20 crore. This includes small to medium-sized manufacturers, storage units, transporters, retailers, marketers, distributors, etc.
3. Central License: Necessary for large food businesses with an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 20 crore. This category includes large manufacturers, operators in the Central Government agencies, importers, and operators in airports and seaports.
Importance of FSSAI License
- Regulatory Compliance: Having an FSSAI license helps businesses comply with the stringent standards set by the FSSAI, which helps in maintaining food safety.
- Consumer Confidence: An FSSAI license acts as a mark of assurance for consumers regarding the safety and quality of the food products.
- Business Enhancement: It enhances the credibility of the business, helping in business expansion and growth.
- Legal Advantages: It protects the business against legal actions and penalties in case of non-compliance.
Process of Obtaining an FSSAI License
The process involves submitting an application form B to the Food and Safety Department, either through the online FSSAI portal or at the local FSSAI office. The application must be accompanied by the necessary documents, which vary depending on the type and scale of the food business. These documents typically include ID proof, address proof, a list of food categories, kitchen layout plans, and more. Once the application is submitted and verified, the FSSAI issues the license, which is valid for a period of 1 to 5 years and requires renewal before expiry.
Obtaining an FSSAI license is crucial for any food business operating in India, as it ensures compliance with national food safety laws and builds consumer trust in the quality and safety of the food being sold.
